About the Artist
Calen James Adams
Calen James Adams was born in 1983 in Milford, Ohio. Calen's spark for art developed at a young age. He was raised in a household where art was second nature. He was influenced by his mother (a potter) who managed fine art galleries and he watched his father, Larry Adams, a watercolorist. At a young age, Calen traveled across the U.S. and explored many towns and cities that all had a rich tradition of art.
At the age of 18, Calen moved to Maui, Hawaii to surf and bask in the sunshine. Calen immersed himself in Maui's rich culture. He first lived in the small beach town of Paia and later moved upcountry to Makawao where he enjoyed the rich agriculture and ranch lands. In summer of 2007 he purchased his home in historic Wailuku. In 2009, he married the love of his life and in 2014 they welcomed their first child, their daughter, and then in 2017 their son arrived.
Calen is a quiet, reflective and ambitious artist. Calen is a member of The American watercolor society and Hui No’eau visual arts center. Calen is a self-taught artist and offers a unique style. He enjoys watercolors for the technical aspects as well as the pure enjoyment of mixing paint with water. Creating his own textures and colors with the medium. His main focus is to capture Hawaii’s historical scenes before they disappear.
